Music Projects
When Rebirth RB-338 was released in 1996, I first came into contact with making music. In my student room in Maastricht, I often sat behind my computer until deep into the night, experimenting with beats and synths. I knew little to nothing about making music and worked purely from intuition and feeling. Listen, try, listen, try — hours on end, almost in a trance.
When I lived in the squatted OLVG hospital in Amsterdam East in 1998, making music became more serious, and together with Peter Rutten I founded the band 3-1. In the beginning we made rather abstract, vague, unpredictable noise, but as we learned more our tracks gradually improved. We moved from Rebirth to Reason, Logic, and Ableton, and alongside software more and more hardware entered the studio. The Korg Electribe, Polysix, Roland 505, MPC, MicroKorg, and many other drum machines, samplers, and workstations found their way into our setup.
Eventually, we played with 3-1 until 2010 and performed hundreds of live shows both in the Netherlands and abroad. After we stopped with 3-1, we worked for a while on a new project called TCS, though that didn’t last very long. In 2016, Peter and I started making music again under the name Van Pi, and later together with Lilian Hak under the name LHISPR.
Below is an overview of the musical collaborations I have worked on with friends over the years, always with great pleasure.
LHISPR (2018-2019)
LHISPR originated in 2017 as a musical collaboration between Lilian Hak (LH), Ivo Schmetz (IS), and Peter Rutten (PR). The collaboration actually came about by chance after Lilian called me because she needed a few fresh ears to listen to some tracks. I don’t even remember exactly how everything unfolded, but at some point Peter and I were sitting together with Lilian in the studio at OT301, working on her tracks and some new ideas.
After a number of studio sessions, a first EP with two tracks was released. Two more EPs followed, after which the collaboration came to an end, as we were all quite busy with other projects.
The music of LHISPR can best be described as a blend of electronica, beats, ambient, and vocals, combined into an eclectic yet cohesive whole. Each EP was accompanied by a video in which I tried to translate the musical atmosphere into visuals in a fairly abstract way.

Van Pi (2014-2016)
After the wild, chaotic electropunk years with 3-1, Peter and I started Van Pi in 2014 to make calm, electronic listening music. The sound sits at the intersection of experimental and accessible. Not music for the dance floor, but listening music with a slightly cinematic and visual character.
We wanted to make music we ourselves enjoyed listening to, but above all we did it because we loved making music together in the studio. There was never any ambition to perform live with Van Pi.
After a number of sketches, we decided that some tracks needed vocals — calm, warm voices that fit the atmosphere of the music. On the first track, Dreamroof, the vocals were provided by Anna Speller. After that came several instrumental tracks and some remixes, culminating in the track Cards with Chagall in 2015.
We worked from track to track, and once we were satisfied, I would create a no-budget video clip for each release. After releasing it, we simply moved on to the next track. Almost all Van Pi tracks were released on our own Basserk label.
Since 2016, we haven’t released any new Van Pi material due to a lack of time, but perhaps something new will appear in the future — we never officially ended the project

TCS (2010)
TCS stands for Three Curious Shapes or Triangle Circle Square.
The project came about by chance. Shortly after we stopped with 3-1, David from ROJO asked us to come to São Paulo for a week to collaborate with a group of artists on an exhibition (with performances and concerts) at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS). We couldn’t pass up that opportunity, so Peter, Paul, and I hastily formed a new project under the name TCS.
Before leaving for Brazil, we prepared part of the music and videos in Amsterdam, then completed everything on site at the museum in São Paulo and performed there. It was a fantastic week spent with Lucy McRae, Yusk, Bernhard Fleischmann, David Quayola, Anna Taratiel, Lotje Sodderland, and other artists and musicians.
3-1 (1999-2010)
Bouncing electropunk with an insane live show.
The name 3-1 is derived from “trinity” or even “the Holy Trinity,” and originated from the ambition to start an art collective together with my friends Peter and Jos after art school — a collective to collaborate on music, art, video, and graphic projects.
That collective never came into being — Jos moved to Antwerp after graduation, while Peter and I moved to Amsterdam — but something else emerged. When Peter and I (and others) lived in the squatted OLVG hospital in Amsterdam East in 1998–1999, we suddenly had the space and time to focus on music and organize our own parties.
I had started making music on my computer, but soon a Korg sampler, a Polysix, and other gear joined the setup. The first performances were experimental, noisy sets in squats in Amsterdam and Maastricht. Musically, they weren’t much to speak of, but our enthusiasm was infectious, and more gigs followed.
In 1999, the OLVG was evicted and, together with a group of artists, we squatted the former Amsterdam Film Academy (OT301). This became our new base for rehearsing and performing. Our music evolved from noise into an eclectic mix of jungle, electro, techno, and other strange electronic styles—a sound we dubbed Pistol Pop.
Peter and I were no longer alone. In the OLVG, graphic designer Paul joined us to work on the videos we projected during live shows. Later, musicians Jaap, Raymond, and Sanne, as well as performers Eline, Saar, Hannah, Anne, and Krul joined in, making the performances increasingly wild and chaotic.
In the years that followed, the number of gigs grew rapidly. We were no longer only invited by squats, but also by established venues such as Paradiso and Melkweg, museums, galleries, and festivals in the Netherlands and abroad (Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Poland, the USA, and Japan). Almost every weekend we piled into our battered Volkswagen van to drive to one or two shows.
Alongside live performances, recordings were of course made. The first albums were self-released; later everything was released through our own label, Basserk Records. Strangely enough, we never fully managed to capture the energy of a live performance on record. The recordings usually sounded fine, but I always felt that something extra happened live, giving the music a new dimension.
